Ministry of Tourism Launches National Consultation Workshop for Tourism Strategic Plan 2026–2030

( Posted on September 10, 2025 )

The Ministry of Tourism has launched the National Consultation Workshop to develop Sri Lanka’s Tourism Strategic Plan 2026–2030, bringing together representatives from all nine provinces and 25 districts to shape the future of tourism.

With the current Strategic Plan (2023–2025) concluding, the new roadmap will align with national development goals, the updated Tourism Policy, and global frameworks. The Ministry aims to deliver a strategy that meets sector needs, promotes sustainability, and supports inclusive growth.

The evidence-based planning process will include asset mapping, capacity assessments, stakeholder input, and situational analysis. Focus will be on nature-based, community-driven, and MSME-led tourism products to ensure equitable benefits across regions.

Over the next three to six months, the Ministry will work with SLTDA, SLITHM, Lead Consultant Dr. Samantha Pathirathna, and a wide range of stakeholders—hoteliers, travel agents, tour guides, academia, and provincial authorities—to develop a strategy that is both visionary and locally grounded.

Visa Global Company’s sponsorship of workshop logistics highlights international interest in Sri Lanka’s tourism revival and the importance of public-private collaboration. The Ministry encourages further private sector support for provincial planning.

Guided by Hon. Minister Vijitha Herath and Hon. Deputy Minister Professor Ruwan Ranasinghe, the process will remain aligned with national priorities. A validation phase will ensure transparency and stakeholder ownership, culminating in a unified, inclusive, and globally competitive Strategic Plan.

The inaugural workshop was held at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo, with participation from the Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, the Deputy Ministry Secretary, Senior Assistant Secretary Mr. Russel Aponsu, and representatives from both public and private sectors involved in tourism development.
