Dehiwala Zoo

The Dehiwala National Zoo, which has an exceptional gathering of outlandish and indigenous fauna, is one of the most established Zoos in Asia. Diversity of the zoo is indicated by the presence of an aquarium walk through aviary, reptile house, butterfly garden and many cages and enclosures. Dehiwala Zoo houses 72 species of Mammals, 65 species of Birds, 31 species of Reptiles, 89 species of Fish, 03 families of Amphibians and 30 species of Butterflies etc. Dehiwala Zoo has become well-known among the visitors not only for collection of native and exotic animals but also for landscaping with lush greeneries.

Zoological Garden is situated in 11 km from the Fort – Colombo. You can opt for a bus or a train to reach Dehiwala from Colombo. However, a train ride is much more convenient and more preferable. You can board the train from Colombo Port. Open daily between 8.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. (Last ticket sale at 17.30 hrs.) and can be reached by public transportation. Daily elephant performance at 5.15 p.m. Elephant and pony rides also are available at the zoo, which is very famous in Sri Lanka tourism. A souvenir shop is available to the visitors to take home a piece of beautiful memory they had in the zoo.
