Come participate in a sacred festival
of remembrance

A significant day in the Buddhist calendar, Poson, celebrated on the 4th of June, commemorates the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka over 2500 years ago. The religion which is now followed by 70% of Sri Lankans, was first introduced when Arahat Mahinda, son of the Indian King Asoka, converted the Sinhalese King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism after they met on Mihintale Rock in the city of Anuradhapura.

The main site for celebration on Poya is the summit of Mihintale, where devotees flock on this revered day. Religious celebrations are organised at Buddhist temples islandwide and the streets are decorated with beautiful lanterns and illuminated pandols depicting significant events in the life of the Buddha during this sacred and serene festival.
