The Caravan Arrives in Donetsk

On Friday 4 October the “Mega Tourism Caravan” arrived at the fifth largest city of Ukraine, Donetsk. The city fondly known as the “ City of a Million Roses “ was founded in 1869 by a Welsh businessman, John Hughes, who constructed a steel plant and several coal mines in the region; the town was thus named Yuzovka in recognition of his role in its founding ("Yuz" being a Russian or Ukrainian approximation of Hughes). During Soviet times, the city's steel industry was expanded. In 1924 it was renamed Stalino , and in 1932 the city became the center of the Donetsk region. Renamed Donetsk in 1961, the city today remains the center for Ukraine's coal mining and notable steel industry center.

The main events of the day were workshops conducted for tour and travel agents and the meeting between the Ambassador and the acting mayor of the city. In the morning hours of the day the first work shop for 100 travel agents were conducted at the “Ramada Donetsk Hotel”. Hotel Ramada Donetsk - the only chain hotel in Donetsk, for tourists and offers a full range of services for relaxation and efficient operation. The hotel has 165 comfortable rooms, several restaurants, a lounge bar, spa and fitness complex with a swimming pool, beauty salon, meeting rooms, conference and banquet facilities. The hotel is located on the picturesque waterfront district, Kalmius in the central part of the city and not all the hotels in Donetsk have such a convenient location as Ramada Donetsk, which is ideal for leisure and business guests.

In the afternoon hours of the day at the office of the acting mayor of Donetsk, Mr. Nikalai I. Volkov, a meeting was held between the Acting Mayor and Ambassador. Here too the Sri Lankan envoy explicitly explained the acting mayor on the “Mega Tourism Caravan” and other tourism promotional campaigns conducted in CIS countries. The mayor who was convinced of the efforts of the Embassy in promoting Sri Lanka Tourism, whilst extending his best wishes for the campaign said that all possible support will be accorded to the Ambassador and team during their stay in Donetsk.

The second workshop for the day was conducted in collaboration with a renowned travel and tour operator company “Join Up”. In continuation of “Mega Tourism Caravan ” held in August 2013 in the Republic of Belarus, ‘Tourism Promotional Campaign’ in CIS countries, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation with the collaboration of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau launched the fourth phase of the promotion campaign in the Ukraine 1st October 2013.
