On this route is the Bird’s Island,an island amidst the reservoir used by birds for nesting. Elephants braving waters of Senanayaka Samudraya to reach the island for feeding too is a common sight at dusk in the dry seasons. Makaraya is also one of the four main camping sites at Gal Oya Wildlife Park and one favoured by ardent bird and elephant watchers.
