Kandy

As you head towards the central hills you will find clusters of shops on the Kandy Road that specialise in selling many different items - cane, brassware and leather among them. In addition, visit a spice garden to purchase cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, mace, black pepper and turmeric. Wander through the fragrant groves and you will be amazed by the superior quality of fresh spices compared to those on your supermarket shelf.

However, the best-known attraction on the Kandy Road are the girls of Cadjugama, ('cashew village') Dressed in colourful saris with flowers in their shining hair, these pretty vendors are not shy about flagging down passing vehicles with the sole intent of selling their freshly packed cashews. It all began in 1934 when one young woman roasting cashews by the roadside was asked by a passing motorist to sell them.
